Week 3: Web 2.0 - What Is It?

Here are discussion questions for this week. Do not feel obligated to answer all the questions. Feel free to ask any questions you have along the way! Looking forward to the discussion!

Q1. What do YOU think Web 2.0 is? Try a one-sentence definition in your own words (Reading 3.1, 3.2).

Q2. What are "digital natives" and "digital immigrants"? Do you believe such a distinction exist? What do you believe are the implications of such distinction in education, especially k-12 education? (Reading 3.5)

Q3. Do Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants think differently? How and why? What are the implications of these arguments for k-12 education? (Reading 3.6)

  1. Web 2.0 is defining new limits. After watching "The Machine is Us/ing Us" on youtube it seems like Web 2.0 is setting new standards and making the web more 'flexible' as they said.
The video starts out with how digital text is different from written text and then explains all the different things you can do to digital text. It seems like web 2.0 is another program that will allow us to manipulate text for our benefit and much more easily.
"Digital natives" are the young generation, even younger than us, who were born with technology at its peak. These are the children who will rarely write letters and send them out in the mail, but almost always use e-mail and text messaging.
I do believe that such a distinction exists because it is happening right in front of us. Soon traditional forms of communication such as, "snail-mail" will be eliminated and technolgy will be right there to take its place.
All of this technolgy is fantastic, it truly is improving our world but for the k-12 education it has its pros and cons. The pros being that they are emerged with the best of the best technology and learning how to use all of it at a young age but then again they may become dependent on this technology and no longer understand how to do things for themselves. For example, a child needs to write up a book report and it needs to be in a specific format; of course the child is going to go online and go to google/yahoo/askjeeves and find out the specific format but what if the internet is down? What if their computer crashes? Will he/she know how to look up a reference book in the library with the information they need?

  2. I believe that digital natives and digital immigrants do think differently. Digital natives have grew up with technology and use technology on a daily bases, while the digital immigrants did not have the privilege to have that technology. The digital natives and the digital immigrants think differently because the digital natives can not just sit there and listen to lectures all day. If a digital native were to sit there in class all day and listen to lectures they would be bored. The world is changing and technology is becoming a huge part in education. Look in the classrooms today, there are smart boards that the teachers do not even know how to use, but the students do. I believe that digital natives and digital immigrants just see the world differently. For example, look at our parents, they hardly know how to use a computer, unless they got lessons. Now look at children in a classroom, they know how to make games up and do things on the internet that I am not even sure of how to do.

  3. Good to see you here Sara and Kim! Thanks for making the first posts. Sara made an interesting point here about the pros and cons of the fantastic technology in K-12 - what do you think?

Both Sara and Kim believed the distinction between digital natives and digital immigrants - do you agree with them? What are the implications of this distinction to you as a teacher-to-be?

  4. I think that web 2.0 is an interactive was of communicating through a web-based site that allows users to share videos, blogs, sites, and other forms of online communication.
“Digital natives” are the children today who have grown up using technology as part of their daily lives. “Digital immigrants” are those people who have not grown up using technology and find it more foreign than the natives do. I do believe that this distinction does exist because just as anyone learns a new language, they are not as familiar to the dialect as those who have grown up immersed in that language. For K-12 education, the implication of this knowledge is important. We, as the digital immigrants, are not going to be as comfortable with new technology unless we practice, practice, practice! Our students will come into the room with more knowledge about how to use pieces of technology than we have. We need to do our best to incorporate technology into our classrooms and receive the necessary training to be proficient in this new field. Just as someone who is just learning to speak a new language, we will eventually blend in and be good at our new skill but, it will take time and effort.

  5. I think that Web 2.0 is the new generation of sharing, communicating, searching, linking people and places together and lastly a new way of life for many people. I think this because you can do just about anything on the computer and when you need to know something all you do is search, “google it!” Web 2.0 links people and place and most importantly knowledge. It’s a way to get the information out to everyone around the world. If a new study is found helping children read better and they want to spread the word, all they do it post it on the internet. It used to be that you would hear about it at church or the gas station when people met together, then it was when you read about it on the paper, however that would only got to a select people who went to the place or read it in the paper. Now, anyone from just about any location that has internet access can get on and get the latest and greatest news or research old news. It is amazing how much we have changed over time. No need to go to the library to look up an answer just hop on Web 2.0 and find it quickly and from multiple sources.

  6. "Digital Natives" are the children today who are born into a world with all of this new technology, whereas "Digital Immigrants" who were not introduced to technology at a young age, and are now learning it later in life. Like in any difference in generations you will find distictions. The digital natives are fluent in how to use video games, computers, internet, etc., while immigrants learn at their own pace how to use them and there will be a language barrier. Students now in the K-12 years are for more advanced in the techbology department than some or most of their teachers, so it is the job of the teacher to practice until they are at the level of their students, or maybe even more advanced. We need to incorporate this new and growing technology into our classrooms, but also need to make sure our student's know how to do their work without a computer as well. It is important to not be dependant on techonolgy, and give students the fundamentals of how other generations got along without this technology just in case the computers break, or the internet is down.

  7. Web 2.0 in my own words can be defined as a way for the new generation to communicate, search, and share new ideas that will continue to help link people together. For most of the older generation, this technology is quite foreign to them. This technology ables us to have the world at our finger tips. In other words, we can easily type in a destination or search just about anything right inside your home. Web 2.0 is a great tool that gets information out to anyone and everyone around the world. This is such a great use of new technology because anyone who has access and knowledge about a computer can acquire any information desired. For example, you can read the newspaper, keep in touch with old friends, and find the latest research on most anything. The web has become so advanced and different that when we use this technology to blog or forge a link we are also teaching the machine to learn more. People are sharing, linking, and collaborating to come up with more new ways to advance our web. What will be next???

The article about "digital natives" really caught my attention and I found it to be interesting. "Digital natives" are those included in the young generation who were born into the ever growing years of technology. Technology surrounds us and our daily life and those born into this peak of technology have great advantage over "digital immigrants". These "digital natives" include the children who will rely on e-mail and the web to and in order for these children to get the best education with the necessary technology, teachers will have to change and teach in a way to include technology in their curriculums. When teachers learn the technology inside and out they will provide vast opportunities for their students and their future. Teachers who are technology savvy will greatly help the young generation in the long run.

  8. Web 2.0 is taking technology to a new level, it is a new form of digital text that is another from of technology will make programs easier and more convenient for us once we understand how it works and it becomes universal. Its a way for upcoming generations to communicate to one another. It is a great tool for everyone to communicate more frequently and is easy. For older generations it may be harder for them to grasp the concept but it is very easy to learn and understand.

Digital Natives is those children who are born into technology at its peak. This article really made a lot of sense and was very interesting to read. These children never went with out having the latest technology. These children rely on the internet, and e-mail. We need to catch up to the children so we are able to teach them using the latest technology programs out there because that is how these digital natives learn best.

  9. Web 2.0 is an interactive way for people to communicate. It allows people to contact each other and share information of all types. It is the people that have control over the information being shared on the internet.

I found a website that provides many links for examples of Web2.0 technology. http://www.go2web20.net/ . It has an index for all types of Web 2.0 applications including photo storage, games, blogging, music, travel, business, etc. If you click on the tag for the topic you’re interested in this website gives you a whole list of applications to match your interests.

In response to Dr. Shi’s response I agree with Sara and Kim. I think there is a distinction between digital natives and digital immigrants. As a teacher to be we have to be aware of how technology exposed the children and families in our class are. Many families don’t have 24/7 access to the internet in their home which is something we need to take into consideration in our classroom. All of this technology is like a different language to many people. We have to be aware of what the families know and have access to and work with them. If we as a teacher were to make a class website and class blog we would make sure we showed the families how to access them. We would also need to have other forms of communication for families who didn’t have the internet at home or at work. We have to include all of this technology in our classroom so that the children are better prepared for the new technology that will be created in their future.

  10. I believe that Web2.0 is a great way for people to communicate, share ideas, and discover new information. However, I also believe that there are some negative side effects....How much are we putting at the finger tips of young children? Yes, Web2.0 is so advanced and easy to use, but that isn't necessarily a good thing. There is so much inappropriate and false information on many sites nowadays, and with technology advancing so quickly and spreading so widely, there is not a lot of ways to keep this information from our young students. It is our job as teachers to help our students and their parents to become of aware of not only the pros of Web2.0, but also the various cons.

  11. Web 2.0 is the next generation of the World Wide Web which allows people to create and share designs and information online.
“Digitial natives” are people whose digital technologies have already been in existence since they were born. These people have grown up with digital technology (ie: computers, the internet, cell phones, MP3 players). “Digital immigrants” are people who were not born in the world of technology but have become fascinated by and adopted many aspects of the new technology. Yes, I do believe there is a distinction because, personally, I’ve noticed that people my age, who were born with technology rising, are more comfortable using technology and can catch on quicker than some people who were born in a time were these technological advances were not around. I think those two terms are very accurate. I know in my family, my parents, aunts/uncles, and grandparents are not that technologically savvy. I always seem to be showing them how to work their new digital cameras or how to look at videos on YouTube online. The new generation seem to have a much better grip on technology than our parents do because we were, in fact, born in the technology generation. The new generation, I feel, are lucky to have this technology at their fingertips. We will be able to create new exciting ways of expressing our thoughts.

  12. I think Web 2.0 is a great new innovation because it allows people to access the internet and makes it easier to share ideas and thoughts quickly and easily. Digital natives are the younger generation. They have an easier time grasping new concepts when it comes to technology because they have grown up using it already. Digital immigrants, which is an older generation, has a harder time grasping these new concepts because they have not grown up with it. It is normal for children to help their parents when it comes to using computers, because children have grown up using comptuers in school. With this new technology, it will make using the computer and the internet easier and more efficient.

  13. I believe Web 2.0 is the newest age of technology in which there is a heavy reliance on the internet for many aspects of life. It allows those who use technology to have infinite connections with the world.

Digital natives are those from the younger generation who are more competent in understanding and using technology to its fullest extent. Digital immigrants are those from older generations who are not as familiar with technology. I do believe a distinction exists, but I do believe that digital immigrants aren't "old people" because some older people do use technology and some do not. However, those who are natives have a different relationship with the internet and other technologies because it is such a big part of their everyday life. They think differently in that those who are immigrants are unaware of other connections that can be made.

  14. Web 2.0 is the latest and greatest innovations that allow people to use the internet and digital technology. Digital natives were born in the midst of digital technology, while digital immigrants are an older generation that may have a harder time learning to navigate the digital world. Digital natives think differently than digital immigrants. Digital natives are more open and comfortable to technology and using it, while digital immigrants take longer to navigate and digest new ideas of the digital world.

  15. Web 2.0 is the newest form of technology which is becoming more interactive and allows for the sharing of information.

Digital natives are able to understand and use technology because they are from the younger generation that have been exposed to it since they were young. Digital immigrants are not as savvy with technology because they are from the older generation.

I don't think a distinction exists because I know that in my family, my aunts, uncles, and parents don't really know how to use the computer and internet. It takes them longer to send an e-mail or look up something online, where it would take me only a couple of minutes to do so.

  16. Web 2.o is a new technology that allows people to communicate and share ideas with one another. It places high emphasis on using the Internet in many aspects of life.
Digital natives are those who are born into this new age of technology where they rarely write letters, for example. This generation relies heavily on the internet and other technology to communicate with their peers. Digital immigrants haven't grown up with this new technology and it is therefore more foreign to them.
I think there is a distinction between these generations as I see how hard it is for my mom to grasp different concepts on the computer whereas I can most always figure things out.
Teachers who use technology in their classroom will find that children are more engaged in the lesson and will therefore learn more.

  17. I believe that web 2.0 is a way to allow people to use and discover the latest form of web technology. As the technological world grows at a very fast pace, this allows people to share information with each other in an advanced way.
In my mind, 'Digital Natives' are those that are fluent in the technological world. This tends to be the younger generations that have had things such as computers, cell phones, texting, and other other things digitally related since they were young or since they were born. Digital natives are accustomed to this way of life. For the most part, everything is fast paced and easily adapted by them.
‘Digital Immigrants’ are those people of the opposite from Digital Natives. These people tend to be from older generations and who have not grown up in a technologically based world. They are called immigrants because things such as texting, iPods, and google are foreign to them. Personally, my mother knows enough about computers to email, search, and to play. My grandmother however, has never touched a computer.
I think that there is a large distinction between those who we call digital natives and those who are digital immigrants. The difference is people who are brought up with this advanced lifestyle find it easier to adapt and those who haven’t struggle with catching up. Today, most classrooms use advanced technology such as computers, elmo’s, and video to teach children. It allows the teacher more access to things that those in older generations did not have.

  18. Web 2.0 is sites that allow users to communicate, share information, or to change website content.

Digital natives are the students of today that grew up surrounded by technology. They spend most of their time using technology such as computers, video games, digital music players, web cams, cell phones, and other toys and tools of the digital age. They are native speakers of the digital language of computers, video games, and the Internet. Digital immigrants are those that have not been born into the digital age but at some point later in their lives have been fascinated and adopted many or most aspects of the new technology. I do believe such a distinction exists because each generation is so different when it comes to technology. When I was a kid all there was was video games. I still think video games were not played as often as they are today. The generation before me didn't have video games. Now children in elementary school have cell phones. Technology is so normal to them because they have been born into it. I know people my parents age that have facebook and have cell phones. They never were exposed to this digital world growing up yet they have adapted and become so apart of it. I was not born into technology but instead I grew up seeing different technology coming out as I got older and now I am addicted to technology. When I was a child reading was very important. Now children spend more time with technology than reading.

  19. Web 2.0 is technology familiarity and being able to efficiently use a computer, computer program, and the internet.

Digital natives are those who grew up using a computer in their daily lives and are familiar with different programs and the latest technology. Digital immigrants are those who grew up before the technological age and began using a computer when they were older making it much more difficult to learn and become as familiar with computers compared to digital natives. i believe a distinction does exist because when children are using a computer or learning to use one they are not afraid of what their actions on the computer will do. they do not worry about losing or deleting important information or files. Adults think very differently and are constantly worried about clicking on the wrong thing and messing up their computer because they are not as familiar with the technology. in education, i believe it is important for the teachers to allow computer time for the students in school because not all students have access to a computer at home and school may be the only place they see and use computers. it is important for teachers to show students how to use different programs such as the microsoft office programs because these are useful school-related resources.

Q3. Do Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants think differently? How and why? What are the implications of these arguments for k-12 education? (Reading 3.6)
