  1. Students who have an unlimited access to the internet are more likely to succeed and attend college than students without this unlimited access because they have access to knowledge that the other students do not. The internet provides an immense amount of information and if students do not have access to this knowledge will fall behind and not perform as well as those who are exposed to the internet on a daily basis. Wealthier school districts are able to provide their students with a rich environment of technology and poorer schools put their students at a disadvantage because they are unable to provide this type of environment for their students. In the long run, students who are exposed to unlimited internet access are more likely to attend college because they have a stronger knowledge base than those students who were disadvantages and did not have that technological knowledge for this advancing technological world.

As educators, we can be advocates for our students in order to close this digital divide. We can apply for grants and do our best to help fund technology in our schools. Research shows that technology provides children with more opportunities to succeed and, as advocates, we should bring this type of information to our administrators to get our point across. We need to be the voice of our students in order to have their needs met.

Some pros of using technology in the classroom are that it provides the children with a diverse learning experience, it accommodates for many learning styles, broadens the horizons of lesson planning, broaden the students horizons, provides the children with much needed knowledge, allows the students to become technologically advanced in this technological world and provides many interactive experiences in the classroom.
Some cons of using technology in the classroom are that parents and caregivers feel as if it is replacing the teacher, divides exist between children and adults as they are the natives and adults are the immigrants, teachers often don’t possess the necessary skills to incorporate technology into their classrooms and it is often very expensive.

  2. Students with unlimited internet access are more likely to succeed and attend college than students without unlimited internet access because they have the time to truly explore what the world wide web has to offer. When students that do not have computers at home only get a certain amount of time a day to surf the web and play with the computer, they not only know the tricks to really finding good information, but they miss out on learning opportunities that the kids with computers at home enjoy. They also miss out on other aspects of the internet such as communication via email and IM.

As educators, to help close the digital divide, we can work our best to make sure that students who do not have computers at home know resources they can use. For example, the teacher can tell the student and their parents about libraries and other local internet centers so that the students can go to these places. We can push for funding in schools and look for grants that can benefit the schools and students.

There are pros and cons of using the internet in the classroom. The pros are that the students have wide access to information. However, a con is that many schools are very strict about the sites students can go to. This is good because it prevents students from viewing sites that are inappropriate or harmful, but some schools even restrict game websites or other sites that even though seem to be just recreational, could be beneficial in some ways in adjusting those who are not familiar to the computer to the internet. Some other pros are that it helps students make connections and see many perspectives of things they are learning. The internet helps students to find the answers to questions they have and there are also great games students can play to better their understanding in all subject areas. Some other cons are that too much technology can prevent students from using other resources such as books and other hands on materials. Our society is so reliant on technology, that this is a real issue.

  3. Both Heather and Jeanne made some very good points about why it is important to expose children to the internet on a daily basis. They also provided both positive and negative feed back about using technology in the classroom. How ever how can we make the parents/caregivers more comfortable with the use of technology in the classroom so they see it as more of a positive transition? How can we adjust the cons of using technology in the classroom so that it because more positive and more beneficial for teachers to use.

  5. There are many reasons why students with unlimited internet access are more likely to succeed and attend college than students without unlimited internet access. Technology is becoming the future of most children and when some are without access to a computer at home they begin to suffer academically and risk their future. Technology has become so popular and is being used in most jobs today. There are even jobs that are being created as we speak that involve new technology. Education often reflects a society and since technology is becoming the future it is important for every child to have the necessary tools and technology to become successful. Children who do not have access to computers at home will not have the opportunity to explore on their own and practice using different software programs. These children will be limited as to how much time they are allowed to spend using a computer. Children with ample time to spend exploring the internet and becoming computer savvy will become successful with digital technology and be able to integrate it into their daily lives.

I agree with Heather and I think it is extremely important for future educators to become advocates for our students. As a future educator I will make sure that children in my classroom will have more time to use computers to explore and create their own. I think it is important to incorporate technology into the curriculum because it is evident that technology is becoming important and will eventually become something that is necessary for children’s success in their future. I know how important technology is becoming and it is important to prevent children from falling in the digital divide or what is now being called “participation gap”. This means children have fewer opportunities to develop the necessary digital literacy for such a technical world.

As future educators there are many ways we can adjust the cons of using technology in the classroom so it becomes beneficial and positive. One way we can do this is by sending news letters home with children explaining to parents what the children will be learning to do while on the computers. If parents and guardians are informed on what their child is learning and how it can greatly help and impact their future they might not have the view that technology is taking over the teacher. I think the use of technology should be used properly in classrooms. For example if teachers are using computers, or television in place of textbooks or novels, students might not learn how to read as effectively. I think the most important thing to keep in mind as a teacher is to include technology in the classroom but don’t forget about the “traditional ways” of effective teaching. In other words, using technology as a primary source might take away from the student’s ability to think creatively/critically or develop their own thoughts and use their imagination.

  6. I believe that students with unlimited internet access are more likely to do better in school because of the fact that they have that great resource at all times. Internet has taken over the way we learn as a society, and without it you are bound to fall behind.
When a teacher assigns a project on the Continents the children will most likely go home and Google it. The internet can give you hundreds of thousands of pieces of information with a click of the mouse. Doing this project with a child who has internet access will be complete very quicky, when on the other hand the child who does not have the internet at home will have to try to find books or pester there parents/siblings about information that they most likely are not aware about. Therefore, the child with the internet is completely his assignment in a timely manner, and actually learning. The child without internet will have a hard time even finishing the project let along learning something.

As teachers we need to understand this digital divide, because it is not fair to the students who do not have internet access. Ways to prevent this from being a problem is when an assignment is assigned instead of requiring the research to be out of the classroom, give the students some time in class to go on the internet or even go to the library if they which. If a teacher does this the students will be able to get information on their topic before they go home so they have some knowledge base on what they can use.
Another thing we can go to help is maybe even talk to the parents about the situation. Some families may not have a computer because of various reasons, but there is always a local library around that most likely has computers with internet access. If the students weren't able to research during class for some reason ask the parents if they would be able to bring their son/daughter to the local library for a short time so the student can do some research.

Using technology in the classroom is a norm at this point of time. I remember when I was in first grade, I was already using computers and that was in 1996. We are now in the year of 2009 and instead of computers it is MACs. Everything and everyone are much more technology-based which can be both a pro and con.
The pros of using technology in the classroom is that it is teaching the students about technology and the benefits it gives us.
Technology allows us to do more complex things that now only takes seconds. For example, e-mailing, sending someone a letter takes about 2 - 3 days to get to the destination, with e-mail the destination receiver will get it within seconds. The internet is re-shaping our ways of communication, and more importantly the time it takes to communicate.

Technology can also have its cons. With all these children being so technology-dependent it is scary to think what would happen if their computers were gone. Would they know how to do research in the library using books? Would they be able to just write a letter and send it through the mail, and have to wait at least 4 - 5 days for a reply? Maybe our younger generation is getting to relient on getting results so quick. For example, a child wants to know the answer to a riddle, of course they will google it. What if the internet was gone for some reason? Would they be able to go reseach it within literature books? Its a scary thought to think that we would have millions of people confused as to what to do without the internet, but it would happen.

Students who have unlimited internet access will be better acclimated to a host of areas. These include more practice and experience in, keyboarding, web searching, using newest or 2.0 technology, interacting with the digital community, exposure to other cultures/ethnicities and various news feeds that provide an idea about the worlds view on news events. Students may even experience and have a feeling of global citizenship. For all these reasons, these students will be better prepared and able to thrive in the college experience.

For the students that have limited access to the Internet, they will have to try to catch up and acclimate themselves to the digital world. They may also suffer from the lack of exposure to the above mention items, such as competent keyboarding skills, exposure to different cultures/ethnicities, web 2.0 technologies and more.

    *
Educators can help close the digital divide by making sure our students have adequate time and guidance with commuters and the internet. We can encourage students to explore, and help them create a sense of digital citizenship. Teacher can apply for grants for computers in the classroom, work with local business and the community to donate old, but still viable computers to the school or to students for home use. Teachers can also invite different members of the community to come into the classroom and share their knowledge. Doing this can show how almost everyone uses computers/technology despite any number of things such as age, sex culture/ethnicity social or economic status and much more. One of the biggest technologies uniting the world is cell phones. Teacher would be able to have anyone from mothers and fathers, to construction workers to politicians and anything in-between, come in and give a lecture on its use and importance. This example is great way to tie in parents and the local community with the school community.

Some of the pros for using technology in the classroom are; widening the students experience to technology that they will be working with in their adult life, weather or not they go on to higher education; The sheer amount of information that is available to the students is amazing, as well as the diversity of approaches this information is presented in.

Some of the cons of using technology in the classroom are; students spending so much time on the internet that it detracts from other forms of learning; students need to be able to communicate via the internet/virtual world as well real life face to face communication. Most important of all we all need to be able to function without technology in the event of its failure.

Thank you, to my blog community for sharing, especially those I got to read before posting and helped me focus my response.

  8. Because the new generations are now digital natives, there is now a digital divide between those who have unlimited internet access, and those who do not have unlimited access. Those students who do have unlimited acess are more likely to attend college than those who do not simply due to the fact that they have resources abailable to them all the time.

As educators it is important for us to help close the digital divide. We need to make sure that those students who may not have access to a computer at home should have a little more time in class to work with them and work with a classmate who has unlimited access so that the other student can receive the amount of computer knowledge as the others. By having a buddy with the computer the students can show each other cool things they discovered while on the computer just like we had done on the first day of our class.

Some of the Pros of using technology in the classroom are giving learning a different approach and having an abundance of information for students at their fingertips. When learning using computers and the internet the things students can learn are infinate. Using technology in the classroom are that teachers have a broader idea of different lesson plans for different learning styles.
Cons for using technology in the classroom can be that schools may not have enough money to have computers in the classroom, or not enough for every student in the class. Even when the schools have computers in the classroom they can be very strict as to what the students can access, which can be good and bad because it blocks sites in which students shouldnt be going to, but some sites in which can be beneficial can be blocked therefore limiting some of the information that can be learned. Another con can be that students start to become dependant on technology and therefore don't have the knowledge or experience of doing things without the computer such as looking things up in a library, writing letters as opposed to emails, addressing an envelope, etc.

  9. Ashley, Sara, Joe and Jenn all made very good points about the pros and cons of using technology in the classroom, what we can do to help close the digital divide and internet access affecting college. Can anyone think of some specific ways that educators can get families that may not have computer access in their home involved in using computers and other forms of technology?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Educators could get families involed in using technology even though they don't have access to it at home by getting the whole community involved. Usually, the local library has updated technology and educators can take field trips there or schedule after school events at the library to encourage parents to come along as well. If there are no public places with technology in them, educators can do their best to get the whole community involved in raising money to have technology in a public place for all to use. Even using the school (if it has technology) as a meeting place for events such as a movie night on a big screen in the gym could be used to encourage parents and students to use technology . This could also provide the necessary exposure to differnt forms of technologies that many families do not have.

  11. Students who have unlimited access, will mostly likely succeed than a student who does not have unlimited access because the access of knowledge that is being obtained. The internet has a lot of knowledge that the students need to learn, therefore it is good for a student to have unlimited access to the internet.

One thing that can be done as an educator would be to make sure that there is time daily for the students who do not have the unlimited internet access, to go on a computer and learn the computer and internet. The teacher can also give the students assignments to do on the internet then allow the student’s time to work on that activity.

Some pros for using technology in the classroom would be that the students will have more access to the internet; they will have a different way in learning the information, and allows the student to become better with technology. Some cons would be that not every student will have the same internet experience, not every student will learn the best from using the internet, and the teacher might have a lot of internet experience.

  12. • Students with unlimited internet access are more likely to succeed in school and attend college because they have more opportunities. If a child doesn’t have unlimited internet access they will not be able to know what opportunities are out there while looking for a college to attend. There are older ways to find out about colleges such as books, but they are not up to date and may not have correct information. However if a child wants to go to Penn State they can access the internet at any time and find out all about the college without even visiting it. The child who has unlimited internet access can succeed in school also because they can find help to questions while doing their homework rather than waiting for the next day to ask their teacher. Let’s face it we are an internet based society now, there is no way around it.
    • As educators we need to help get the best technologies and supplies for our students. In tough economic times like these, it’s even harder to get more money for schools. Educators need to advocate for their students in order for each child to have the best opportunity to succeed. There are grants out there that support technology for students. All we need to do is find them and then go through the steps to receive the grant.
    • The pros for technology in the classroom are that it is all around us so as educators we need to teach children how they can use it for their benefit. Children get to see many different things such as the visual learner would like power point slides of lessons, different images to go along with the lesson. There are many different ways to use the technologies we have, we just need to get our feet wet and then go for it!
    • The cons for technology in the classroom are that children will rely on the internet and it will take away from looking it up in books, encyclopedia. If this happens children will not learn how to look things up by hand however to “Google it.” This takes away from their education in a way. Also, parents see the use of too much technology as its being used instead of the teacher teaching.

  13. Students with unlimited internet access are more likely to succeed and attend college because they will have more opportunities to explore what the internet has to offer.

One part of the article that I thought was interesting was the idea that stated "education reflect society, and technology is the future." Students with unlimited internet access will be able to explore the web and discover so many different and fascinating things- they will also be able to do it on their own time. Students that may not be able to access the internet at home and can only do so at school have a limited time and are usually only allowed to explore certain sites.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Although it would be ideal to work in a community where students have unlimited internet access it is not reality so as teachers how are you going to adjust your teaching methods/styles so that students are still able to succeed even if they do not own a computer at home? For example I would allow for some class time for the students to use the computers in the classroom to explore the internet and search new ways they can learn. What are some modifications we can make so that we are still incorporating a technology based classroom but still allowing everyone to succeed?

    ReplyDelete
  15. The "digital divide" was the focus of much national attention in the 1990's, but unfortunately has been overlooked for much of the 21st century. However, there are still many individuals and educational groups that believe the gaps in access to computers and digital media have not gone away.

Students with an unlimited access to the internet are more likely to succeed and go onto college because they have a much longer time to explore and research things on their own computer, they are presented with many opportunities to develop a knowledge of technology, they are given the chance to try their hand in movie making, song writing and storytelling, they are able to work collaborately with other students, and they are able to work on a computer that is uploaded, has unfettered internet access, high bandwidth, and continuous connectivity (unlike many community or school computers).

As educators, we can help to fix this malnutrition of technology by providing computer labs after school and on the weekends, tap into local colleges and universities to help with technology training for teachers, use more project based learning, and fight to even out teh technology imbalances between the rich and poor school districts.

Som pros of using technology in the classroom would be:
-Allows children to take responsibility for their own future
-Helps children to learn how to find things on their own (taking charge of their own learning)
-Helps students seperate truth from fiction
-Puts a lot of information at the children's disposal

Some Cons of using technology in the classroom would be:
-Children might rely too much on their computers to do all of their work
-Sets limitations for academic achievement of disadvantaged children

Is the problem with technology that there is too little of it, or too much?

U.S. Census data shows that 143 million Americans, or about 54 percent of the population, are using the Internet. It also reported that the rate of growth of Internet use in the United States is currently 2 million new Internet users per month, with Internet use continuing to increase across income, education, age, race, ethnicity, and gender lines (http://www.edutopia.org/digital-divide-where-we-are-today).

  16. I feel everyone has made some very good points here, on both the pros and cons of having tedchnology in the classroom. I believe many of you mentioned that the pros are that students will be able to look up a lot of information on their own time. However, many of you also pointed out that by having so much of this information available to them, it can make them dependent on the internet, and that without it they would be lost.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Being "illiterate" to technology is a really scary thought, and can have a negative impact on those who are lacking the devices and technology to keep them up to date. How do you feel about some of the websites' "user-friendliness"...? Do you think that all websites are made so that they efficiently communicate with the people that the sites are directed towards? What are some ways that websites could be changed around to enable people the people that they are directed towards to better understand them?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Some ways to get students involved with computers would be to actually have a workshop on it. The teacher could introduce the computers from the start; how to turn it on, the applications the computer has, how to navigate through the computer applications, and then eventually how to use internet.

If the student does not have a computer the teacher can suggest going to his/her local library because almost all libraries now have computers with internet connection. Also, the student could stay after school or even stay in at recess if he/she wishes to use the computer.

Even though some people may not have the resources that most people do i.e. computers there are many opportunities around us.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Rachel, I like your ideas about providing computer labs after school and on weekends. This would enable many more students to be able to have computer access and free time to explore the internet and college options which Victoria also mentioned. As Sara and many of you have mentioned ideas about workshops for students and ideas for helping students with technology. I think that this is something that would benefit families too! Teachers could hold workshops at a local library or in their school computer room to help families understand technology a little more and to understand what their children are doing with the technology at school. Teachers could hold this at night and have activities the children could do so that the working families could make the events and wouldn’t have to find other child care. The children could even work with their families to teach them what they are learning about. One of the best ways to learn something is to teach others.

  20. Students with unlimited access to the internet have the opportunity to explore and learn whereas students without the internet do not have this opportunity and will therefore, suffer. The internet allows students to learn so much more than they used to. The internet provides for movie making, writing, publishing, music making, and artistry among a few. Students with out the internet are missing out on these incredible opportunities the internet supplies.
It would be beneficial to have computers in the classroom so if the students did not have access at home they would be able to have this experience in school. If computers in the classroom weren't an option, hopefully, there would be a computer lab in the school where the students could go for a block of time and practice.
There are many pros to using technology in the classroom such as the benefits it offers. It is necessary for children to become digitally intelligent in order to succeed later in life. The world is advancing in technology and the students need to keep up with it as it will be a vital part of life in the future. The only cons I can think of would be that it would be a distraction to children when something else is being taught. Childern might want to always be on the computer, or rather, when they are on the computer they might be doing something different than what is directed.

  21. What are some reasons why students with unlimited internet access are more likely to succeed and attend college than students without unlimited internet access?

Almost everything we do has some sort of link to the internet. From homework to college applications, students' lives are becoming more dependent on the internet. Those children that have access to the internet tend to be more successful because of their familiarity with technology.

What can we do as educators to help close the digital divide?

We need to ensure that those students without internet access get to the computer labs in our schools. We need to make sure they're technologically literate or they will have a hard time succeeding.

What are some of the pros and cons of using technology in the classroom?

The digital divide becomes a problem because the students who don't have familiarity with the technology will feel insecure or embarrassed.

  22. I feel that everyone has made really good points on the digital divide and what educators can do to help close this divide. The gap is not only between the young and old, but also between peers. Not everyone is privileged to have a computer in their home or at easy access. in the classroom this needs to be taken to account in order to close this gap. Teachers can have technology classes to teach the students about the different uses and how the internet can be helpful. Letting students show their peers helpful tricks on the computer will help them remember it better. Teachers themselves need to up to date on technology. They can do this by attending workshops to teach them about the technology and how to teach it. There are many pros to having technology in the classroom. IT better relates to the students and it helps the students stay up to date with the latest technology. The problem with trying to keep up with technology that it may not alway be available to you in the classroom. Or there might not be enough for all the students to be able to use it.

  23. The fact that students have unlimited internet access there whole lives definitely affects them getting into college or not. They have had the upper hand throughout their education because they were able to have the benefits that technology gives. Unlimited internet access would hold students back from their own capabilities.Another reason why they would be more likely to get into college would be the simple fact that they had the ability to learn research skills that they will need in the future.

As educators we need to make sure we close the digital divide. By introducing the students at a young age to this technology they will be able to learn and grow with the new technology that comes out. We have the responsibility to start them at a young age. Taking the children into the computer labs at the elementary level is crucial. If a school does not have a computer lab then perhaps teachers can hold a field trip at the library.

And although technology can greatly help the class by expanding the students knowledge, it can also act as a distraction. There is so much available to the students that it is hard for them to stay on track.

  24. We are a nation that is technologically advanced and it is important to learn how to use the internet. Knowing these skills will help students later on in college. They will be more likely to go on to higher level education if they have unlimited access to materials and means of research.

It is important as teachers to help those children who do not have access to the internet at home to make time to spend with them in computer labs or libraries to show them how to use the internet and other programs like Microsoft Word. They will need to have these skills in higher grades to write papers and work on projects, if they are not technologically literate, they are more likely to struggle.

Pros would be that it will help students find and retrieve information, they will have more options to do projects if they can use the internet to do research, it will help the teacher make lessons more exciting and captivating.
Cons would be that some parents might feel that with the use of too much technology in the classroom, the teacher is being replaced. Technology can also be expensive and many schools, especially city schools may not have the means for it. too much technology could also distract students from learning.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Students that have unlimited access become more successful because they have so many sources to explore and learn information. They become educated in technology itself, which will be needed later on in college and in the workforce. If a child does not have access early on, when the child gets older technology will be foreign to them. They will have to not only learn what they need to learn in school but also learn the technology needed in school. Pros of technology are access to a wide variety of information, different ways of learning, different ways to do things. Cons are some people think technology is replacing the teacher, there is information on the internet that might be false and children might think it is true, and the more children spend with technology the less they might read.

  26. What are some reasons why students with unlimited internet access are more likely to succeed and attend college than students without unlimited internet access?

students with unlimited internet access are more likely to succeed and attend college than students without unlimited internet access because there is a lot of school research and projects posted on the internet. Student without access to the internet do not have the resources other students have. this makes most classwork difficult because often students have to look up information on the internet in order to answer questions they have with their assignment. Also, colleges post information about their school and programs of study and students without an unlimited access to the internet may not have the opportunity to research information about different schools they may or may not want to attend.

What can we do as educators to help close the digital divide?

as educators, we can close the digital divide by offering opportunities for our students to use and access the internet in their free time (before, during, or after school). having a wide range of available computer lab hours can allow students an extended time of internet access when they are at school (when there is not a computer with internet access in their homes).

What are some of the pros and cons of using technology in the classroom?

Pros: individual or team research for projects

Cons: distractions to the students; it is very easy to get off track and visit "fun" websites when they are supposed to be doing class/school work.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It is easy to see that students who have unlimited access to the internet and new technology are more sucessful in the long run. They have an abundent amount of sources to learn from and discover. Not only can they research topics they are learning in class, they can also learn from using new technology. Children today are very knowledgeable when it comes to using computers and the internet, and other technologies. Their parents have less knowledge because they didn't grow up with it. As educators, we can close this "digital divide" by allowing our students to access the internet and to use what it has to offer. Computer labs and technology classes are great for students to be able to do this. Parents can purchase cheap computers for their children to use at home. Using computers in the classroom have pros and cons. Pros are that it allows the students to see different points of views and to do research. Cons are that it can become distracting because students can surf the web and go onto fun websites, such as myspace and facebook. THis may also take away from children reading.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Students with unlimited internet access are much more likely to do better in school because they are able to have many more resources available to them, then students without internet access. Students with access have “the world at their fingertips” because they are able to search anything and everything on the world wide web. Students without these resources will have to resort to other means of finding information, which may be more difficult to attain. These students may have to go to a library and research books which can be very time consuming and tiring. Whereas, students with internet access have the ability to find their answers to questions within a minute.

As educators we need to be aware that not all children have the luxury of having internet access 24/7. As teachers we can make sure all/most assignments are able to be completed without having to research their information on the internet outside of the classroom. Teachers should allow in-school time for research in the library and in the computer labs so that all students have a fair shot of getting a good grade on their assignments.

The pros of using technology in the classroom is that it teaches students how technology works and that way children will be able to further their learning with technology as it progresses. Students will be able to have a new way of learning and gathering information other than textbooks. The cons of using technology in the classroom are that some students may be more technology savvy then other students. Some students may get frustrated with computers if they do not catch on to the way computers work. Some students may not learn easily with computers and would rather read a book then research everything on the internet.
